20 Minute Radius: Sunflower Picking at Hill Creek Farms

Rowan University students pose with sunflowers they picked at Hill Creek Farms

We always associate North Jersey with blooming sunflower fields, but to my surprise, we’ve got the most beautiful farm right in our backyard here at Rowan, flourishing with pretty flowers, tasty food and many photo opps. The 10 minute drive from Rowan to Hill Creek Farms in Mullica Hill provided us with hours of fun and weeks worth of sunflowers the size of our faces.

With a metal clipper in hand, you take a ride back to the rows and rows of sunflowers at the farm to snip your own. Or, you could be like us and wander right into the fields by foot because why not explore, right?

From there, we clipped our favorite flowers and headed over to the fresh market. From the homemade hot apple cider donuts to the endless pastries, meats, macaroons, sandwiches and salads, this farmer’s market had our mouths drooling and appetites rumbling. You can even bring your food up the steps to their Loft Cafe where they sell smoothies, coffees, juices and their homegrown wine. They often have live music playing in the loft, so I’d highly suggest checking this place out!Hill Creek Farms, near Rowan University

It’s even a great place for the kids with train rides, rock mining, fruit-picking and rubber duck racing. Try bringing your parents and siblings out to this farm over Rowan’s Family Weekend for a unique “agritourism” (agricultural tourism) experience, as Hill Creek calls it. When the weather gets colder, they light up their fire pit for the perfect fall night. Who knew this activity-packed farm was right around the corner?
