Meet: Kathy Balin, Esquire

Degrees: Juris Doctorate from Temple University, Beasley School of Law; Bachelor of Arts Glassboro State College (now Rowan University)
What is your area of expertise? I have been practicing law for over 20 years with a concentration in the criminal field. I was, for many years, a county prosecutor in both Cumberland and Cape May County. Before that, I worked as a assistant district attorney in the Philadelphia district attorney’s office. In 2003 I started my own law firm where I mostly concentrate in juvenile, criminal, and family law.
What’s your favorite class to teach, and why? American Constitutional Law. I particularly love that area because teaching the constitution brings our class back to the founding of our republic. Those founding principles are very meaningful and continue to dictate how we as a people interact with the government.
Share with us one aspect of student engagement that you enjoy the most, and why. I truly care about each and every one of my students. I try to interact with them on a professional and, often times, personal manner. I believe that learning is holistic and each person is unique so that each person learns differently. Therefore, I feel it’s important to get to know each student individually.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your academic discipline or your research focus? I wish everyone would know that there are instructors like me who do this because it is what I love to do and I am with the students because they are who I want to be with.
Do you have a favorite Rowan memory? Many of my students go on to law school and keep in contact with me throughout their careers. I especially love hearing from those students as they reach that goal. I try to keep in touch with other students as well no matter what they do after they graduate Rowan. I’m very proud of each and every one of my students and their achievements whatever they may be.
