Today we feature Niyati Patel, a junior Computing and Informatics major with a Computer Science minor and concentration in Data Analysis. Niyati is a first-generation college student from Burlington, NJ (Burlington County). She is also involved with Beta Alpha Psi honor society.

What inspired you to choose your major?

“I have an interest in technologies, especially in the computer field. This is because technology is always evolving, and I love to challenge myself and learn new things. Data science and machine learning are becoming huge trends and important parts of the future, and computer science goes hand in hand with that. So, to help build my future in this very relevant and evolving technical field, I chose computer science.”

How are you involved on campus?

“My main focus and interest while in college is in the technical fields. Rowan University is one of the best universities for technical fields like computer science. I’ve been very involved in Rowan University for career development and such opportunities that help me reach my goal of learning data science.”

Could you share with us one moment that made you feel inspired or confident that you’re in the right field for you?

“When I started learning Computer Science at Rowan University there were many topics that were important to me in data science. For example, in Python and Java I love the mathematical part where I learned topics like linear algebra, statistics, calculus and many more. These all helped create my interest in the data science field, so after learning those topics I feel inspired and confident that I chose the right field at the right university.”

Describe for us an experience you’ve shared with a Rowan professor in which you felt like you were working with a visionary in your field.

“Rowan professors are amazing and really helped inspire me. They have taught me many programming languages like C, C++, Java and Python. One of my classes with Professor Christopher Simber was my favorites because of the personable way he taught. His style of teaching increased my interest and skills in the programming language.”
