Today we feature first-year student and Theatre Arts-Acting major Jeszenee Turner (she/her) from Denver, Colorado. Here she shares with us some advice for incoming first-year students as well as what inspired her to attend Rowan University.

Could you share a few on-campus activities, clubs, sports or events that you’ve attended so far? What was your favorite, and why?

I’ve been to the ASA [African Student Association] Model Event, ASA Dance Show and Improv Club. Out of these, my favorite was the ASA Dance Show because there was Jamaican food, which was really good, and they also had a photographer, who took really good pictures. My friend performed for them, the dancing was fun and the music was diverse and entertaining.

What are some ways you’ve made friends this year?

I’m always seen sitting in the lobby of Mimosa, and people talk to me there, which is how I’ve made a good amount of my friends. I’ve also made my friends from classes, and those friends introduce me to their friends and so my group gets bigger and bigger everyday.

What is one thing about Rowan itself that you liked, that encouraged you to enroll?

I enjoyed the energy and how you guys interact with one another. I’m not from here so when I was talking to the Dean of Students, he was kind and really made me feel like he wanted me to go to this school, and I did.

Any advice for high school seniors about choosing a school?

Choose the school that really focuses and has a good program that you want to do. Don’t worry about making friends and meeting new people — it comes natural when the time and people are right.
